Mission

To offer the most up to date classes in computer technology, computer science, and information systems for the needs of all students.

Job Skills: We offer classes and certificates for the technical job skills in demand now by businesses; in all areas of for computer knowledge workers. We also offer classes that prepare you for the most popular industry certification exams.

Transfer for a four year degree: We offer may paths to transfer to a four year school in Business, Information Technology, Computer Science, and newer technological degree programs.

AA Degrees: We offer 4 AA degree programs in Networking, Programming, and Applications Design.

Computer Competency: We offer classes for the person just starting to use a computer in core computer competency, web design, and programming.

High Technology classes: We teach high technology classes in a lot of areas (PHP, RubyOnRails, Oracle, MS Certification, Wireless networking, C#, Linux, and more)

Fall 2011 CBIS CS COMIS

Free Computer Labs: Students who enroll in CBIS, CS, or COMIS classes are given a free account to come in and use our  state of the art computer labs at both LAC and PCC. Call (562)938-4479 or vist N115 for the LAC lab hours, or call (562)938-3909 or visit EE-249 for the PCC lab hours.

If you are intrested in transfer to a Computer Science Program at a CalState or UC school, you will need to take either CS 11, 12 and 13 (C++)  or CS 21 and 22 (java). Check the assist.org web site to find out exactly which classes transfer from the CBIS department at LBCC to the school of your choice. A degree in Computer Science pays some of the highest starting pay for a new graduate of any degree and almost all graduates are now getting jobs when graduating.

Work Experience Class: Workexperience classes are not being offered at this time. Our programs are being redesigned to not require them starting in Fall 2012.

  • Leading universities are reporting that enrollment in computer science and engineering is up significantly this year as students discover computer-related degrees offer better job prospects and earnings potential. "The government has made it clear that computer science is a growth field, and I think that message is getting back to students and their parents," says Bruce Porter, chair of the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Corporate recruitment of top computer science graduates has stayed strong despite the economic downturn. Last spring Georgia Tech's College of Computing had the highest job placement rate of any major on campus, as well as the highest starting salary. "The financial sector--credit card companies, insurance companies--are very much interested in computer science students, as are defense companies and software development and networking companies," says Georgia Tech's Cedric Stallworth. Last year, computer science graduates from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign received an average of 2.3 job offers and had an average starting salary of more than $72,000. The number of students enrolling as computer science majors is up 40 percent from last year at Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University reports that computer science applicants are up 14 percent from last year and 76 percent from 2005.
